Gianmarco Guglielmi Local church Italian scholars said Tuesday that they may have discovered an early version of a Michelangelo statue of Christ, discarded by the painstaking artist for a flaw in the marble. RAI state TV showed pictures Tuesday evening of the possible Michelangelo, depicting a sorrowful Christ with the cross. The recognized final version of the statue is at the church of St. Mary over Minerva in Rome. But scholars took note of the look a like at a church at Bassano Romano outside Rome two years ago, Silvia Danesi Squarzina, an art historian at Rome's La Sapienza University, told Italy's ANSA news service. Subsequent research examined early documentation describing a first version of the statue. A 1521 letter has Michelangelo setting aside the early version for a flaw in the marble -- a black line on Christ's face. Well, the Christ of Bassano has a black stain on the face, Danesi Squarzina said. An early sketch for the statue and similar incisions on both statues support the hypothesis that the Bassano piece is a work by Michelangelo, the art historian said. I thought that this show was particularly interesting because it talks about Michelangelo's work, which I find quite intriguing because he was one of the most talented painters I have ever seen. Three months later, a large letter with the initials ââ¬Å"NYU Admissions Departmentâ⬠which graced the smooth envelope addressed to Jodie arrived in the mail. Excitedly, she opened it up and read ââ¬Å"Congratulations, you have been accepted!â⬠She jumped for joy, until her parents found out, and refused to let her travel 2 thousand miles to attend the univer sity. It canââ¬â¢t be too hard to live on my ownâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Quite often in the United States, teenagers have decided to do just that, and have gained the legal power to make their own financial and life decisions. But its not easy, and the process of becoming legally independent before youre 18 can be lengthy and difficult. Divorcing your parents, as some refer to it, doesnt happen just because youre tired of being yelled at, and it is not a process to be taken lightly. Becoming emancipated means that it is necessary to completely support yourself financially, and to also have the right to make decisions which would normally need parental consent. To be emancipated by the court, you must be at least 16 years old. You must also meet one of the following conditions: You must be married, be in the U.S. armed forces, must be living apart from your parents or guardian and be managing your own money, or the court must decide that emancipation is in the best interests of you, or your parents. Most people wonder if emancipation is ethical or not. If a parent canââ¬â¢t divorce their child, how can a child divorce their parent? Normally, a parent has legal power over a minor until he or she reaches the age of 18. Legal dependence is defined by a California law (Code 19-7-1) as remaining under the control of ones parents, who are entitled to the minors services and the proceeds of their labor. In other words, until youre 18, your parents legally have control over you and any money you may earn. On the contrary, there are options that can be undertaken to disregard those legalities. According to many laws in the United States, there are three ways that a parents rights can be given up: adoption, mistreatment of the child, or the marriage of the child. In adoption parents can give up their rights or they can be taken away by the state, says Ann Deibel, a consultant with the Office of Adoption in the Department of Human Resources (DHR). A parent can give her child to DHR, a licensed adoption agency, or to another adult through the Superior Court. Parental power can also be lost because of neglect or abuse such as a child often being left home alone or in the neighborhood for long periods without supervision. Likewise, if the child is frequently hungry, dressed inadequately for the weather, absent from school frequently, bruised or has other marks of physical violence, withdrawn or overly aggressive, and not receiving needed medical attention Deibel says although the department is responsible for trying to reunify the family, they can petition to terminate the parents rights in juvenile court. To most, it seems fair for a child to have a say as to whether or not he or she wants to leave from their household, but in instances like this, the state would take the liberty to remove the child right away. The third way a parents rights can be relinquished is through marriage of the teen. The Georgia Code for instance, states that Parental power shall be lost by: Consent to the marriage of the child, who thus assumes inconsistent responsibilities. In other words, when teens get permission to marry, they become legally independent. Some states, such as Florida make no legal provisions for teenagers who simply dont want to live at home anymore. What about all the teens who say, I cant wait to get out of this house!? What separates these cases from those in which emancipation is a logical next step such as the examples above? According to Chief Judge of the Fulton County Juvenile Court, Sanford Jones, Its very fact-specific. There is no set qualification as to who can become emancipated I had one case with a young woman whod been living on her own, not knowing where her parents were, and that made sense for her. But Ive had kids come in just saying, I dont like answering to my parents; I want to get emancipated, and that doesnt mean as much. A young person who is at least 14 years old may petition the Superior Court of the county in which he or she lives. The petitioner must state that she is willingly living apart from her parents with their permission and is supporting herself financially in a legal manner. The court will notify your parents or guardian and the district attorney or your probation officer if you are on probation. The court will then decide whether granting you emancipation is in your best interests. If the court declares you emancipated, your DMV identification will show that you are ema ncipated, so people can treat you as an adult when you do things like apply for a job or enroll in college. The court may later set aside your emancipation, if it finds that it didnââ¬â¢t know important facts when it granted it, or if you later cannot support yourself financially and become dependent upon public assistance. As for how many teenagers undertake these proceedings, Jones says the cases are few and far between, I hear of maybe two or three a year, he says, so probably less than a dozen happen annually statewide. It isnt frequent at all. Judge Jones also showed negativity towards the legal process You dont have the right at your age to choose where you want to live, or where you go to school. You shouldnââ¬â¢t have the right to chose to get rid of your parents. Emancipation began in the 1981 Northern District of Georgia District Court Case Street vs. Cobb County School District, a 17-year-old unmarried student at South Cobb High School petitioned to be recognized as legally independent of her parents. She lived on her own and wanted to attend school in the district in which she lived, as opposed to the one in which her parents lived. The courts eventually ruled that the young woman was legally independent of her parents, and legally recognized as emancipated. This ruling took into account that while the girls parents wished her to return home, she had no intention of doing so and had fully supported herself for four months. She was not married, but her mother said that although she wanted her daughter to return home, she would consent to her marrying her boyfriend. The court determined that to recognize a married minor as emancipated, while requiring a single person to remain in their parents care until the age of 18, was unreasonable. This case set a precedent for unmarried minors to be legally independent of their parents in Georgia. These days, some minors try to live away from their parents through more unofficial means. One approach some teens take is to run away from home. But, running away is a juvenile legal offense. You are legally not emancipated if you run away, but you technically are if you can support yourself, clarifies Judge Jones, but the average runaway is not able to support themselves and, therefore, are not really emancipated. If a person under the age of 17 runs away from home, parents can issue a warrant. Then, the police can pick up the teen and return him or her to the parents, or to the Department of Family and Children Services. If there is no warrant, the teen can not be picked up as a runaway but can be held on another violation, like curfew. Emancipated minors are responsible for themselves when it comes to everything, once the final law is put into place. Emancipation may seem glamorous, but life without parents is not all partying and eating what you want, there are negatives and positives just like there are for most decisions that are made. Life with out parents can be a very positive experience if you have the ability and self worth to take charge of your life. Some optimistic advantages of being emancipated are as follows. A teenager may get their own place to live, but he or she will be responsible for paying the rent and any other costs. Also, he or she may get medical care without parental consent. A teen can sign contracts in their own name and are responsible for living up to the contract. It is possible to sue other people, and also be sued by others. A teen would no longer under the control of his or her parents, which means that the parents will have no obligation to support the teen financially, or provide any food, clothing, or shelter. Buying and selling property is possible for an emancipated child. Also, obtaining a drivers license or marriage license or joining the armed services without your parentsââ¬â¢ permission is possible as well. Lastly, you may enroll in a school or college of your choice with out asking your parents. Where there is a positive approach to a situation, there is also a negative approach as well. Emancipation is a major decision that can help a mature teenager who is getting little help from his or her parents to live a more independent life. But emancipation can also cause hard feelings within a family. It is sometimes possible for a teenager to get the relief and help that he or she needs without taking this step. For example: If a teen needs some relief from family problems, he or she might be able to stay with a friend or in a youth shelter for awhile. Most youth shelters will need parents permission to let a child stay overnight. In a case where the parents have forced the teenager to leave, or will not let he or she return, or if it would be dangerous for he or she to return, that teen may be eligible for financial help from that stateââ¬â¢s Department of Social Services (DSS) even if you are not emancipated. You may be able to get help from the Department of Children and Fa milies until you turn 18, including help in finding shelter. Justin Strickland, an 18-year-old who attends West Lake High School in Southern California, has been emancipated since August, at which time he was 17. Justin says his reasons for leaving home were complicated and not something I want to explain in full.â⬠Justinââ¬â¢s life is nothing if not difficult these days. I have a boring social life. I might go see my friends if I have time. I really dont go to parties, Justin says. He makes it clear that living on his own is not easy, frankly describing his daily routine: I get up at about 5 a.m, go to class until 1, and from there I go to work from 2 to 5 p.m. and come home and do homework. I cook and there are dishes to wash and laundry to do. And then around 11:30 or 12 p.m., its time for bed so that I can wake up in the morning. Could you do everything Justin does? Being emancipated means you must work for yourself, provide substantial health care as well as finish your education. Justin says about his schoolwork, I dont think its affected mine. But then he goes on to say, There are times when I have to settle for a B because I dont have the time to devote it to the subject. I dont live as comfortably as I did when I lived at home. There is no one to take care of me when Im sick; theres no one to pick me up when it rains, and I have to walk a mile to my bus and back, says Justin. These difficulties are compounded by the lack of emotional support that most teenagers receive from their families. You really depend on the emotional support from friends, he explains, on dealing with being independent. The support network is really important. In my opinion, I think that emancipation is a good idea for the most part. To help the process run more smoothly, I think that there should be certain guidelines that should be made clearer to teenagers considering this type of legal action. First of all, I suggest that there should be some sort of trial run for the teen before he or she is legally emancipated. That person should have six months or so to show that he or she is responsible financially, by having a stable, profitable job. This will be able to show whether that person can afford a proper home, and the necessities that are needed daily, such as food and clothing. Also, education should be mandatory. That teen should be able to show proof that he or she had been in some sort of education program. Likewise, good grades, and progress should be recorded, and be mandatory. If these requirements are met consistently without parental involvement, emancipation should take progress legally. A child who can take care of these resp onsibilities for that amount of time shouldnââ¬â¢t have a hard time performing that same sort of routine for the rest of his or her life. On the contrary, if these requirements are not met, and the child can not support his or herself, than obviously, legal action should not take place. I think it is important for the teenager to prove himself before legal action takes place. In conclusion, I feel that emancipation will become more popular as todayââ¬â¢s society becomes more independent. Kids are becoming more and more responsible because of their sources of education, and from the problems that arise in the household. Sometimes in broken homes, children are forced to take responsibility for siblings and for parents, so why not for themselves legally? Some may say that emancipation is not ethical, or logical, but to the teenager himself, it is quite the contrary. It can be for many good causes, such as in Jodieââ¬â¢s case, where now, she will be able to attend an extraordinary college and earn a very respectful degree without her parents holding her back.

Strategic Importance of GAP Essay GAP is the single most important development project affecting Turkeys regional relations. Its area of operation borders Syria and Iraq, covering close to 30,000 square miles, about 9. 7 percent of Turkeys total territory. About 6. 1 million people, nearly 10 percent of Turkeys population, live there. The reluctance of international financial institutions, especially the World Bank, to finance dam building in disputed river basins meant that GAP had to be almost entirely domestically financed. This region is relatively undeveloped. Agriculture plays twice the role in the areas economy (39. 6 percent versus 17. 7 percent) that it does in the Turkish economy as a whole, while manufacturing is about half as important (11. 7 percent against 25. 2 percent) as in the entire country. The region only produces about 4 percent of the national income and ranks low in almost all aspects of development, including education and purchasing power. GDP per capita in the southeast region has been roughly 55 percent of the Turkish average (Turkish State Institute of Statistics, 1997:722). GAP is an ambitious project to narrow this gap. When completed, it will regulate 28 percent of Turkeys total water potential, generate 27 billion kilowatts of electrical energy, and irrigate more than 4. 2 million acres of land, thus adding another 50 percent to Turkeys arable farmlands. The amount of agricultural land irrigated by the State Hydraulic Works Administration and the total hydraulic energy (42,162 billion kilowatts) generated in Turkey will be doubled. Moreover, expanding irrigation will allow the production of a larger variety and more profitable crops, hich should ease Turkeys balance-of-payments difficulties. When the total irrigation is completed in the GAP region, the total irrigated area is projected to constitute 19 percent of the total irrigated land in Turkey (21 million acres). Power generation is as important as irrigation in GAPs plan. Dams on the Euphrates account for more than 33 percent of current hydroelectric production in the country, with another 14 percent from the Tigris. In sum, almost half the countrys total hydroelectric generation is being met from dams on these two rivers. By improving living standards, GAP is expected to reduce and perhaps reverse the persistent emigration from the area. Finally, it is hoped that GAP will eventually solve social and economic issues that have led to armed conflict: the bulk of the Kurdish population lives in this poorest part of Turkey. Unequal distribution of land here is a major economic problem that has political implications. ââ¬Å"Some 61 percent of the farmers (about 150,000 families) own less than five hectares (12 acres), and 10 percent of the population own 75 percent of the land. The social structure has remained virtually unchanged since feudal times, with wealthy Kurdish landowners owning dozens of villagesâ⬠(Bruan, 1994: 26). The tendency of all the riparian states to use the water problem as a domestic ideological tool exacerbates the problem. As Kut and Turan suggest, ââ¬Å"Water disputes may be handy to politicians in personifying real or perceived outside threats in the domestic context, and in this way serve to unite the society against foreign enemies and mobilize support for the governmentâ⬠(1997:140). Indeed, the water issue has been effectively used in projecting the developmental needs in each country as strategic priorities and in defining water as an indispensable part of independent, autonomous development. The maximalist positions that all parties adopt regarding this issue might indeed be explained through such ideological imperatives (Kut Turan, 1997). Conclusion Strategic considerations and recent developments have also had a major impact on the water issue. While Turkish-Iraqi relations have been shaped by events in the Persian Gulf region, Syrias stance has been affected by the growing cooperation between Turkey and Israel. There are many reasons for this relationship, but one significant factor is Turkish concern over Syria, and this is in large part related to the water dispute. By shifting the strategic balance toward Turkey and against Syria, the alignment also strengthened Turkeys hand in the water issue (Muslih, 1996:124). From Israels perspective Turkey is the only potential source of water imports. From the perspective of Turkey, having Israel as a credible ally on the southern border of Syria helps ease tensions over the water and related Kurdish separatist activity originating in Syria. All these developments suggest that Syria can no longer use the ââ¬Å"ethnic cardâ⬠in bargaining over water with Turkey. An additional factor here is the potential for Turkish-Israeli economic cooperation related to GAP, the expansion of agribusiness that uses irrigation, and related industrial projects. An official protocol between the GAP administration and the government of Israel in conjunction with the International Cooperation and Training Center of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for instance, is underway, in which the two sides will cooperate on technology and training. In broader terms GAP could contribute to regional development, including potentially involving Syria in peaceful cooperation. A memorandum of understanding signed between the GAP administration and the International Center for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas in Syria on June 26, 1999, for instance, aims to develop an agricultural research center in the GAP area and monitor national resource utilization. Such confidence-building measures can prove crucial for a cooperative solution to the water dispute. Although Turkey is not a direct party to the peace process it has many expectations from a developing peaceful environment in the region. Despite being only on the periphery of the Arab-Israeli conflict, Turkeys internal and external security has suffered from terrorist and Islamic radical movements that flourish in the region. The Gulf War had devastating effects on the economy of the eastern and southeastern provinces in Turkey and contributed to rising separatist PKK activity in the area. Peaceful southern neighbors would help defuse tensions based on developmental gaps between the region and the rest of the country and increase trade. A more peaceful Middle East, if achieved, is likely not only to ease tensions over the Euphrates-Tigris Basin but also create an environment for a cooperative solution to the issue. Delinking the water issue from the wider security concerns, Kurdish ethnic problems, focus on regional underdevelopment, and optimal utilization of water resources instead can itself be instrumental in building regional cooperation in the Middle East. Navratri Significance and Celebration
As the worldââ¬â¢s largest democracy rushes head long into the future; India is still known for its rich culture rooted in its past. For every Indian, celebrating festivals is not merely following rituals but; marks prosperity. With changing seasons, festivals of India depict this change. Navratri, a hindu festival whoââ¬â¢s name itself has change (ratri). ââ¬ËNavââ¬â¢ means nine and ââ¬ËRartriââ¬â¢ means night; this festival is celebrated worshiping, nine forms of Goddess Durga for nine nights. Beginning on the first day of the bright fortnight of the Hindu month Ashwin, roughly corresponding to dates in the Gregorian calendar in September/October.This also usually coincides with the end of the rainy season. It is celebrated two times a year and like every hindu festival Navratri also derives its significance form myths corresponding to its origin. It is said that; Sati (also known as Uma) married Lord Shiva against the wishes of her father, King Daksha Prajapati. In revenge, Daksha organized a huge yagna and invited all the gods and deities except his new son-in-law. Sati decided to attend the yagna despite Lord Shiva's attempt to persuade her not to. The King ignored his daughter's presence and publically abused Lord Shiva.Unable to bear her fatherââ¬â¢s insults, Sati committed suicide by jumping into the yagna fire. However, she was reborn and again won Lord Shiva as her groom and peace was restored. It is believed that since then Uma comes every year with her four children Ganesh, Kartik, Saraswati and Laxmi and two of her best friends or ââ¬Ësakhis' called Jaya and Bijaya, to visit her parent's home during Navratri. Another well known myth is that, demon Mahishasur, after being given a boon by the fire god Agni that he wouldn't be killed by weapons bearing masculine names, caused grave destruction and terror.The gods sought the help of Lord Shiva, who advised the invocation of the goddess Shakti. With the gods' prayers, a divine lu ster sprang from the heart of Lord Shiva and the bodies of all the gods and formed the goddess Adhya Shakti. The gods gave her ornaments, arms and a lion as a vehicle. She fought with the evil Mahishasur for nine long days and nights, and at last, resulted in the beheading of Mahisa on the tenth. The nine nights came to be known as Navratri, while the tenth day was called Vijaya Dashami, the tenth day that brought the triumph of good over the evil.These legends and story are part of the history that surrounds the festival of Navratri and are going to be around as long as the festival continues. First three days of navratri; Goddess Durga are worshiped; Kumari the girl child, Parvati the young woman and Kali, the mature woman signifying the power of the woman which is worthy of respect. To overcome ego, lust, anger; the animal instincts acquired out of triumph we need spiritual wealth. For the purpose a person approaches goddess Laxmi.The fourth, fifth and sixth day of Navratri are d edicated to the worship of Laxmi ââ¬â the goddess of prosperity and peace. Gathering wealth man doesnââ¬â¢t attain true knowledge. Seeking the urge to learn the seventh day is dedicated to worshipping Saraswati, the goddess of art and knowledge. A ââ¬Ëyagna' is performed on the eight day. This comprises of a sacrifice honoring goddess Durga as well as bids her farewell. The sacrifice or offering is made out of clarified butter (ghee), rice pudding known as kheer and sesame seeds. On the ninth day Kanya pujan or girl child worship is performed.These Nine girls symbolize nine forms of the goddess and are offered with new cloths and delicacies as homage to the mother Durga. After the nine nights the tenth is celebration of Vijaya Dashmi when Durga killed the demon Mahishasur. This day coincides with another hindu festival Dushhera when lord Ram killed Ravana and made peace in the land of Lanka. Both occasions mark the triumph of good over evil. Singing and dancing people cele brate each one with spirit of botherhood. The diversified land of India continues to unfold a new definition of celebration crossing every state.Garba and Dandiya from the west, crackers and fireworks in the north to traditional dances of the northeast; It is these festivals that celebrate civilizations. The idea may be subjective but it truly is. Their ethinic nature links us to our roots; religion we belong. A child here grows up in a potential superpower and yet knows what it is to belong to an ancient civilization. Financial Health of Target Corp. Free Online Research Papers The corporation I chose to look at is Target Corporation. The company was founded in 1902 and is headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This company is better known for its Target and Super Target retail stores across the U.S. which you can see from a good distance due to their very impressionable logo- a large red bullââ¬â¢s eye symbol. Target Corporation operates general merchandise and food discount stores in the United States. The company offers household essentials, including electronics, music, computer software, and toys; apparel and accessories, jewelry, and shoes; home furnishings and decor consisting of furniture, lighting, and kitchenware, as well as seasonal merchandise; and food and pet supplies primarily under Target and Super Target trademarks. It also sells its merchandise under private-label brands, including Archer Farms, Archer Farms Simply Balanced, Boots Barkley, Choxie, Circo, Durabuilt, Embark, Gilligan OMalley, Kaori, Market Pantry, Play Wonder, Room Essentials, Smith Hawken, Sutton and Dodge, Target Home, Xhilaration as well as many other well known brands. Target Corporation also operates in-store amenities, such as Target Cafe, Target Clinic, Target Pharmacy, and Target Photo, as well as leased or licensed departments, including Optical, Pizza Hut, Portrait Studio, and Starbucks. The company markets its products through its network of distribution centers as well as through its online shopping site, Target.com. As of June 2, 2010, it operated 1,740 stores in 49 states and the District of Columbia. Target Corporation also offers credit cards such as a Target Visa and the Target Card to qualified guests. Over the years Target has become the second largest retailer in the United States coming in just behind Wal-Mart. The company is rated number 28 on the Fortune 500 as of 2009. After reviewing the financial data for Target Corp., it is obvious as to why. Since Target and Super Target stores offer such a wide variety of merchandise it gives the company the upper leg so to speak when it comes to profits compared to a specialty store. Target stores offer not only the necessities such as food, toiletries and clothing at a discounted price but also non necessity ââ¬Å"comfort itemsâ⬠such as household merchandise and jewelry so even when the economy takes a hit and customers arenââ¬â¢t spending as much, they will still come to the store for their necessities which will mean the company is still bringing in profit. The 2009 financial results in both of the business segments were affected by the challenging economy in which the company operated. In light of that environment, performance in the Retail Segment was remarkable, as the segment generated the highest EBIT in the Corporations history, in a year when comparable-store sales declined 2.5 percent. In the Credit Card Segment, disciplined management led to a 29.4 percent increase in segment profit in a year when Targets average investment in the portfolio declined about 32 percent, representing a near-doubling of segment pretax return on invested capital. The financial results for the second quarter of 2010 reflect better than expected earnings from both the Retail and Credit Card Segments. Performance in the Retail Segment reflects increased sales of 3.8 percent over the comparable prior year period due to the contribution from new stores and a 1.7 percent comparable-store increase. The company essentially maintained EBIT margin rates in the second quarter of 2010 compared to the prior year. In the Credit Card Segment, the company seems to have achieved a significant increase in profit primarily due to reduction in bad debt expense. This is extremely important for a company to do in any economy but considering they were able to do this in the current declining economy is a very good sign that they will surpass previous yearââ¬â¢s numbers in the future. This shows that not only did Target Corp. do remarkably better than some of their competition but also beat their record breaking numbers of the previous year. In a declining market this is exceptional. Cash flow provided by operations was $1,828 million and $2,051 million for the six months ended July 31, 2010 and August 1, 2009, respectively. Target Corp. opened 3 new stores in the first half of 2010, all in the second quarter. In the first half of 2009, Target Corp. opened 50 new stores (37 stores net of 8 relocations and 5 closing), including 23 new stores in the second quarter of 2009. During the first half of 2010, they remodeled 211 stores under the current store remodel program, significantly more than the 15 stores they remodeled in the first half of 2009. The current outlook for Target Corp. is promising, following a recessionary year in 2009. After looking at the assessment it is evident that the inventories have increased relative to cash and marketable securities in the current asset section, and there has been a decrease in the companyââ¬â¢s liabilities and debt. These developments were traced primarily to policies and financing needs related to new store openings. This is very promising news for the company because it means that they are selling the same if not more of their inventory, their costs are coming down and they are able to pay back their debt even with the economy the way it is and the opening of many new stores. (I have included Target Corp.ââ¬â¢s financial statements at end of report) According to Target Corp. SEC report 10-K sales percentages, sales in household essentials has gone up from 22% to 23% from the previous year, sales in apparel and accessories has remained the same at 20%, sales in home furnishings and dà ©cor has gone down from 21% to 19% and sales in food and pet supplies has gone up from 15% to 16% from the previous year. This for the most part is very good news since the economy has been declining and reports show that Target Corp.ââ¬â¢s sales have not been affected that much with many departmentsââ¬â¢ sales increasing. As with any company there is rivalry and competition. With Target Corp. being rated number 2 in the country in discount retail stores they have overcome a big feat already but there is a lot they need to do to stay at the top. In the case of Target Corp. competition is intense. A number of factors support this such as the presence of several businesses that operate in the retailing industry and targeting similar audiences. The main rivals of Target Corp. are Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., Kmart Corp., Kroger, and Costco Wholesale Corp. All of these competitors produce similar products as well as offer some of the same services to consumers. In comparison to Target Corp.ââ¬â¢s main competition, it shows that Target Corp is rated number 2 in Dividend Yield at 1.90% while Wal-Mart is rated number 1 at 2.20%. Statements also show that Target Corp. is also rated number 2 in Market Capitalization with $38.6 B with Wal-Mart ahead at number 1 with $194.6B and ahead of Costco Wholesale Corp. who i s at number 3 with $28.6B. This is a good sign because even though they are number 2 in rankings, Wal-mart is a much bigger company and yet Target Corp. has managed to come in number 2 in rankings with a $10 B lead in Market Capitalization on Costco Wholesale Corp. It seems that Target Corp. is doing well in comparison to its competitors with an upward trend in revenue, sales, earnings per share, net earnings as well as EBIT. Reports also show that Target has surpassed Wal-Mart in many areas. Target Corp.ââ¬â¢s gross profit margin was 29.49% which exceeded Wal-Martââ¬â¢s 24.78% in 2010. Target also maintained the same Earnings per share as their main rival Wal-Mart which was 8.95%. Every year regardless of the economy, Target Corp. continues to upward. To combat competition, Target Corp. has ventured in online-based actions using there own website, internet advertising, partnership and even merger and acquisition. From www.target.com as corporate domain in e-commerce, the corporation maintains a team called Target direct who owns and oversees the e-commerce initiatives. Using this as their official corporate website, the corporationââ¬â¢s current position to the online marketplace is comparatively competitive. Its performance specifically to the online marketing is high. As a result of the stiff competition among the retailers in the U.S., Target Corp. implemented several expansions of its store outlets and distribution centers to extend the corporationââ¬â¢s marketing. Partnership, merging and acquisition are among the strategic actions that the management is taking into practice to fight competition. This is a way to expand their market and distribution coverage. Among the partnership and cooperation engagements that they had are American Online on strategic alliance and Amazon.com in customer service. In June of 2000, AOL and Target Corp. rollout a marketing campaign and established the multi-year strategic alliance and joint marketing and promotion initiatives. This campaign featured a ââ¬Å"special edition CD-ROM of the AOL service with co-branded features and packagingâ⬠being offered in more than 900 Target Corp. outlets nationwide. These CD-ROMââ¬â¢s are offered in Target stores still to this day. In addition, AOL members who use the service in any Target Corp. outlet is entitled to a 10% discount on products bought via target.com. Further more, target.com was made available in the shop@AOL online shopping destinations and other ar eas across AOL. Today, Target Corp. is highly competitive and striving to go along with its competitors regardless of external conditions like the world economy. The management of Target Corp. is continuously creating innovative marketing solutions that may be perfect in its online shopping operation. These innovations are always directed to satisfactory, convenient, and customer-oriented service. It is very important to constantly compare Target Corp. with its competitors as well as look at trend analysis to help determine how the company is doing now against competitors, how it has done in the past and to determine how the company may do in the future. The analysis of a variables past value changes to determine if a trend exists and, if so, what the trend indicates. A technical analyst may graph a stocks price throughout a period of time to determine whether a trend has been established. Analysts often attempt to determine if trends exist for a firms earnings per share. A steady increase in earningââ¬â¢s profit share could indicate that investors and consumers alike are still interested in the company whereas a decrease in the companyââ¬â¢s earnings per share could mean a decrease in interested parties and a hint that they are interested somewhere else which could mean the company would have to change a few things to regain their interest. Summary of Target Corp. Current financial performance: Target Corp. makes great strides in remaining one of the top two discount retail stores in the country. Reports show Target Corp.ââ¬â¢s revenue to continue in an upward trend regardless of the worldââ¬â¢s economy. Reports also show sales increasing in an upward trend from year to year. Reports also show Target Corp.s cash ratio deteriorated from 2008 to 2009 but then improved from 2009 to 2010 not reaching 2008 level. This could be due to the deterioration in the economy and the surplus of new stores being opened around the country in 2009. There appears to be no major problem with the firmââ¬â¢s short-term liquidity position at the present time. Target Corp. has managed to reduce their long term debt since last year to even lower amounts than in 2008. Their Current Assets has increased since 2009 but has not quite reached the 2008 amount. There has also been a steady increase in Accounts payable over the past three years but they have managed to keep in a steady downward tr end in total liabilities. This means even though they are paying more out, they have managed to lower their debt and increase their current assets which could be to the increase in stores and increase in sales. In general Target Corp. seems to be a sound credit risk with attractive investment potential. The management of inventories, a continuation of effective cost controls, a continuation of marketable advertising by management and careful timing of further expansion will be critically important to the companyââ¬â¢s future success. There are several business risks, but simultaneously, there are opportunities as well. Hence, to mitigate the risks and capitalize on the opportunities, a company need to have predefined strategies or plans (Gibson and Barsade, 2003). The notion of strategy has been borrowed from the military and adapted for the use in business. In business, as in the military activities, a strategy bridges the gap between objectives of the company and tactics. Hence, it can be stated that tactics and strategy together, closes the gap between the objectives of the firm and the means of achieving it. However, the question which arises in this context is: why does a business require a strategy to operate in the market place? There are several reasons, but one of them is the changing dynamics of the marketplace. The changes in market place occur due to shifts in the external business environment such as, consumer trends, political landscape, new government regulation or a technological change. According to eminent scholars and practitioners, the business environment is always dynamic in nature and undergoes radical shifts with time (Iivari, 2005). With the great global redistribution of social and economic power, it is expected to continue over the next few decades. Moreover, due to the changes in other business factors such as, the environmental factors, political factors, economical factors, legal factors, social factors and technological factors, companies are compelled to bring changes into their system of operation in order to comply with the external environment (Janicijevic, 2012). Despite several attempts to manage the business environment by devising strategies, the attempts have been futile and it also practically seems impossible for a company to manage the business environment (Jones, 2004). This is because a certain amount of change in one of the factors leads to a drastic amount of change in other factors, due to high interconnectivity.
